A truncated round with State of Origin III on the horizon. Five games, plenty of finals implications, and Penrith looking ominous again.

Round 18 of the 2026 NRL Telstra Premiership was always going to be a truncated affair - the State of Origin bye removes eight clubs from the draw, leaving five matches across the weekend, all carrying significant ladder implications as the competition enters its second half.

Here is what happened and what it means.

Penrith Panthers v South Sydney Rabbitohs — Friday night, CommBank Stadium

Penrith are doing what Penrith do: grinding out wins with a minimal margin when they need to, and taking opponents apart when they have the licence to open up. Against a Rabbitohs side that has found genuine form this season — they are 11th but have beaten Melbourne, Brisbane, and Canterbury in their last four — the Panthers were at their most controlled and, ultimately, comfortable.

Nathan Cleary orchestrated from halves, the forwards took early ascendancy at the ruck, and Penrith scored three tries in a 25-minute period before half-time that effectively settled the contest. The Rabbitohs' cause was not helped by a first-half sin-bin that gave the Panthers a field day in the set-play. Penrith win. Penrith climb. The Panthers are playing finals football before the finals have arrived.

Brisbane Broncos v Cronulla Sharks — Saturday night, Suncorp Stadium

This was the match of the round. Brisbane, who have been one of the competition's compelling stories this season despite their turbulent start, hosted a Sharks side that came to Suncorp with something to prove after back-to-back losses. The contest did not disappoint. Level at 12–12 with 10 minutes to play, Brisbane broke the stalemate with a try from their left edge and a conversion that held up under intense pressure in the final minutes. Suncorp delivered another electric atmosphere; the attendance will have pleased the competition administrators enormously.

The other results

St George Illawarra defeated Wests Tigers in a match that provided more reasons for optimism from the Dragons than the Tigers faithful have seen in some time; the Dragons' 2026 season has been one of the NRL's more surprising stories, recovering from a dreadful start to string together some competitive performances under a rebuilt roster.

Parramatta and Manly met at CommBank Stadium in a match that, frankly, had the feel of a dress rehearsal rather than a main event - both clubs are out of finals contention barring a remarkable run, and the effort levels reflected that at various points. Parramatta won. Newcastle defeated the Dolphins in a clinical display of the Knights' improvement under their current coaching structure.

Finally, the Eels defeated the Sea Eagles at Commbank Stadium to finish up the round. Manly led at half time but a poor completion rate was just one of many factors that sealed their fate in the second half.

State of Origin III - Wednesday 8 July, Suncorp Stadium

The elephant in the room: eight clubs have their best players elsewhere. The Origin III decider at Suncorp on Wednesday looms as the competition's biggest remaining event before the finals series begins. Queensland lead the series 1–1 after a remarkable NSW comeback in Game I and a Maroons win at the MCG in front of 91,671 fans - the largest Origin crowd ever assembled. It is all on the line on Wednesday night at Suncorp.
